PROFILE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Syeda Fahliza Begum is currently a Professor of the Department of Geological Sciences. As a first female faculty member in this discipline in Bangladesh, Dr. Begum started her professional career at the Department of Geological Sciences of Jahangirnagar University in 1994 and is working onwards. She was the Chairperson of the Department of Geological Sciences from December 2018 to December 2021. She was appointed as the Director of the Students Counselling and Guidance Center of Jahangirnagar University in July 2021 and worked for around 2 years for developing the strategies that support students well-being.
She obtained her B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. degrees in Geology from Dhaka University in 1987 (exam. held in 1990) and in 1988 (exam. held in 1992) respectively. She achieved her PhD degree in Hydrogeology from Nagoya University, Japan in 2003. She received the Monbusho Scholarship awarded by Japanese Ministry of Education, Sports, Cultural and Science under the Government of Japan in 1997. As a visiting research fellow, Dr. Begum conducted her research work between 2010 and 2015 at University of East London (UEL), UK. She has written several scientific research papers which are published in several international and national journals. She participated various scientific international conferences and visited many countries including USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Japan, S. Korea and India.
In her about 30 years of professional Journey, Prof. Begum involved herself with different administrative and social activities. She is a member of editorial board of a scientific journal, Bangladesh Geoscience Journal (ISSN 1028-6845). Dr. Begum was elected as an Executive Committee Member of Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association for two terms 2018 and 2022. She was elected as an Executive Committee Member of Geological Society of Bangladesh for the term 1996 to 1998 and of Executive Committee Member of Dhaka University Geology Alumni Association as well.
Dr. Syeda Fahliza Begum was born in a respectable Muslim family in Rangpur district, Bangladesh. She is a daughter of Syed Abul Mortoza and Jahanara Begum from Rangpur. She is married and a mother of two lovely daughters – Rezwana Islam and Irfana islam.
Her research is concentrated on:
- Hydrology and Hydrogeology (hydraulics, aquifer performance tests, groundwater and surface water interaction, groundwater modeling and management).
- Environment and Water Resource Management (rainfall, evapotranspiration, wetlands and rivers, coastal zone, land cover changes, mangrove forests and remote sensing).
