About Department

Archaeology as an academic discipline is not very old in Bangladesh, in spite of the fact that this region has a long history of archaeological practice since the colonial period. The archaeological researches were mainly confined to Govt. Department of Archaeology in the post-independence era. It was only in 1992, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh started teaching Archaeology at both undergraduate and graduate levels of university. By far, this is the only university in Bangladesh where Archaeology is being taught on institutional basis. As an interdisciplinary framework, this department combine various methods and techniques of earth and biological sciences, anthropology, iconography, religion, art and architecture, critical theories, etc.
