Jahangirnagar University was established with the aim of promoting research with all its ramifications in science, social science and humanities at the postgraduate level. During the three and a half decades of its existence, that commitment seems to have been fulfilled to a substantial extent. The ratio of postgraduate to under graduate student enrolment here is the highest among all the universities of Bangladesh. There are 1000 Ph.D. and 1000 M. Phil. students against an undergraduate student population of 10000. Alongside Ph.D. and M. Phil. programme, there is also a strong tradition of one year thesis group research for the final year undergraduate students in most of the major science departments. Since 1980, over 200 Ph.D. and 150 M. Phil. degrees have been awarded; Of the degrees, 120 are from the science faculty, 60 are from the social science faculty, 130 from the arts faculty and 40 from the Biological Sciences faculty.
Most of the science departments have sufficient infrastructure and basic instrumental facilities. Finely tuned sample services are however obtained through bilateral co-operation with institutions and research groups at home and abroad.
The university has hosted many national conferences of the various Scientific Societies, such as the Silver Jubilee Conference of Bangladesh Chemical Society and annual Conference of Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science.
Four teachers of this University have been awarded the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal and Third world Academy of Sciences prize during the last two decades. Quite a few members of the academia are fellows of learned societies like the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Third World Academy of Sciences. Similarly some members of academia in the faculties of Social Science and Arts have been honoured with national awards for their contribution to research and creative work.
