PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Md Monwar Hossain was born in Jamalpur, Bangladesh, in 1971. He was awarded Ph.D from Kanazawa University, Japan in 2007. Before that, he was awarded with a fellowship for working as Research Fellow on “Butterfly Color Vision” at Yokohama City University, Japan during 1999-2001. Dr. Monwar is also working as Collaborative Professor and International Exchange Adviser at Kanazawa University, Japan since January, 2021.

Since his joining in the Department of Zoology in 1996, his research is broadly focused on the Taxonomy, Ecology and Conservation biology of Insects. His current research uses molecular tools and biochemical techniques to study insect taxonomy, biology and color vision.

Dr. Monwar, besides teaching, worked as Lead Assessor of RAG-Butterfly Group in “IUCN-Updating Species Red List of Bangladesh” under “SRCWP” project of the Bangladesh Forest Department funded by the World Bank. He is featured in another project as Deputy Sub-project Manager (DSPM) on DNA Barcoding of Insects funded by UGC/World Bank (http://www.dnabarcodezoolju.com/index.html).

Among his publications, the ‘Butterflies of Bangladesh-A pictorial handbook’, a joint effort, is considered as a landmark work in this branch of Zoology. Hossain was also co-author of the Butterflies of Bangladesh-Inventory Third Phase and Fourth Phase.

He is the founder of the Butterfly Park and Research Centre (BPRC) in Jahangirnagar University. It is a platform for biochemical, behavioral and conservation research of Butterfly (http://bprcju.com/web3/).

Dr. Monwar also the architect of “Butterfly Fair” at the Jahangirnagar University which was persists every year since 2010. This Fair is an educational and conservation awareness approach for young generation as well as academicians and researchers.
