PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Mokammal H. Bhuiyan is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Archaeology at Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. With a comprehensive academic background, including BA (Honors), MA, MPhil, and PhD degrees in Archaeology, Dr. Bhuiyan is a leading authority in his field. His research interests span Buddhist Archaeology, Art History, and Heritage Studies & Management of South and Southeast Asia. As an accomplished author and editor, Dr. Bhuiyan has significantly contributed to the scholarly discourse. He authored the seminal work "Prācīn Bānglār Poḍāmāṭir Śilpa" (Terracotta Art of Ancient Bengal) and edited the notable volume "Studies in South Asian Heritage." Furthermore, Dr. Bhuiyan's research articles on archaeology, Buddhism, art history, and heritage have been published in a multitude of esteemed national and international journals, totaling over 70 publications.

Dr. Bhuiyan's global recognition is evident through his engagements as an invited speaker, paper presenter, and session chair at international conferences, seminars and institutes spanning twenty countries across Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and beyond. His contributions extend to editorial roles, including serving as Editor of Bengalhoard and as a member of the Editorial Board for esteemed publications such as Itihas Sammilini Pravandha Samgraha and FWU Journal of Social Sciences, as well as former Executive Editor of Pratnatattva and Member of the Editorial Board of The Jahangirnagar Review, Part C. Currently serving as the Executive Director of Heritage Management & Research, Dr. Bhuiyan plays a pivotal role in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

His recognition is further underscored by his position as an elected Board Member of ICOM Bangladesh and as an Executive Council Member of the International Federation of Teaching Archaeologists & Historians, Sri Lanka. Additionally, he is a Founder Member of the Asian Association for Heritage Studies, India and the Society for Buddhist Art and Archaeology, China. Dr. Bhuiyan gave the Presidential address of the Ancient India Section at the 33rd International Conference of the West Bengal History Society (Paschimbanga Itihas Samsad).

He has received specialized training from prestigious institutions such as the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and UNESCO on preservation, conservation, and restoration of archaeological and heritage sites, as well as training from the ICOM-ITC on the advanced management of museums and museum objects under the supervision of the Palace Museum, Beijing, China. Furthermore, Dr. Bhuiyan actively contributes to capacity building and consultancy roles, serving as a resource person on archaeology and museums for various government institutions. 

His dedication to the field is highlighted by his memberships in esteemed organizations such as ICOM, Bangladesh Asiatic Society, Paschimbanga Itihas Samsad, Bangla Academy, Bangladesh Itihas Samiti, Bangladesh Itihas Parishad etc. where he also holds the esteemed position of a Life Member. He got fellowship from SAARC Cultural Centre and from Bangladesh Asiatic Society. With his multifaceted contributions and unwavering commitment to the field, Dr. Mokammal H. Bhuiyan continues to leave an indelible mark on the academic and professional landscape of archaeology and heritage studies, enriching the discourse and fostering greater appreciation for cultural heritage worldwide.
