PROFILE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Md Abdus Sabur joined the Department of Chemistry at Jahangirnagar University (JU) in December 2009. Currently, he is working as an Associate Professor in the same department. Dr. Sabur received his PhD in Earth Sciences (water) from the University of Waterloo, and an MSc in Chemistry from Wilfrid Laurier University. Prior to starting his MSc at Laurier, he completed his BSc and an MSc in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar University.
Dr. Sabur, in his research, always focuses on environmental problems and their mitigations. During his MSc at JU, he investigated how poultry feathers, a solid waste, can be utilized as a food additive in poultry meals to combat the environmental pollution by the feathers. His MSc thesis at Laurier, under the supervision of Professor Hind A.A-Abadleh, investigated the surface interactions of various arsenic compounds with the reactive components (e.g. ferric (hydr)oxides) in soil. For the significance of his MSc work, Dr. Sabur received Science Master’s Degree Gold Medal, as the first recipient of this medal in the history of the Chemistry Department at Laurier. Then, he moved to the Ecohydrology Research Group for his PhD in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo. His PhD research, under the supervision of Professor Philippe Van Cappellen explored the potential mechanisms for the mobilization of nutrients, particularly phosphorus, iron, and silicon, at the sediment-water interface under various redox environments.
Being trained in sediment geochemistry at Waterloo, Dr. Sabur is currently exploring his research on the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and contaminants in various natural and perturbed environments, particularly in saline soils. In addition, he has expertise in the treatment of textile and pharmaceutical effluents and was involved in setting up some effluent treatment plants with Professor Syed Safiullah at JU. Dr. Sabur’s research is multidisciplinary in nature and is significant from the agricultural, environmental, ecological and public health perspectives.
