SHORT BIOGRAPHY

মুহাম্মদ  সাজ্জাদ আহসান

My dedication to teaching has been honed over three decades of tutoring, teaching, and mentoring at Jahangirnagar University. I have extensive experience teaching various Graduate courses, including (i) Screenwriting (ii) Media Production Studies (iii) Video Project 2: Docu-Fiction (iv) Television Studies, and (v) Film Studies. Additionally, I have tutored Post-graduate courses such as (vi) Acting for Radio, Television, and Film, (vii) Directing for Radio, TV and Film (viii) Adaptations from Literature and (ix) Television Studies.

Beyond these core courses, I have taught a wide range of subjects, including- (x) Advertising, (xi)Aesthetics(xii)  Bangla Literature and Art (xiii) Emergence of Bangladesh(xiv) Greek Drama(xv) History of Art (xvi)  Introduction to Bangla Theatre (xvii)  Introduction to World Theatre(xviii) Shakespearean Drama(xix)Set Design and Construction(xx) Theatre in Education(xx)Theatre Management and (xxi) Theatre Production.

My commitment to teaching has been further reinforced through guest lecturing at various institutions, such as the Asian University of Bangladesh, Perdana College of Malaysia (Dhaka Campus), Bangladesh University, East West University Bangladesh, Independent University Bangladesh, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, National Institute of Mass Communication, and Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute.

My extensive teaching background has prepared me well to extend my teaching in these areas and to develop new modules and courses. In these roles, I have been responsible for determining module objectives, planning, and assessment criteria, contributing significantly to the design and content of lecture programs. My teaching approach includes delivering lectures and training students as actors or directors for screen and drama productions through practical workshops. I have been teaching (xxii) Research Methodology for MA students to enhance their knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods and apply this understanding in their research design.

Organisational Skills:

As the Head of the Department of Drama and Dramatics in 2006, I spent considerable time liaising with colleagues and administration within the department, faculty, and across the university. I participated in the Senate body, Academic Council, and the Board of Advanced Studies to define the academic goals of my department. Working with various ethnic groups and organizations has further enhanced my organizational skills. My prior experience as a Media Consultant in the English in Action program at the Open University of the UK demonstrated my organizational abilities, where I successfully completed my assignments.

Creative Industry Skills:

I have also worked in the media industry in Bangladesh. Worked in a 16mm film production, where I arranged, rehearsed, coordinated, and conducted production activities as a Chief Assistant Director during pre-production, production, and post-production phases. I co-produced five episodes of a TV series broadcasted on 'Channel I' in 2003. This experience taught me to adapt and overcome the limitations of working in different workplaces.

Communication Skills:

My ability to communicate effectively and collegially has enabled me to work efficiently with teams. Preparing academic calendars and planning strategies for implementation has supported my colleagues' career development. Mentoring junior colleagues by senior staff has proven to be an effective method for fostering team responsibility in the academic arena.

My roles at Jahangirnagar University, AQA, the Open University, UK, the University of Manchester, and other academic organizations have enhanced my communication skills, allowing me to interact verbally with students, colleagues, and other stakeholders. Additionally, my written skills have been refined over the past twenty years through academic and administrative writing. My work as a Media Consultant and Transcriber in the English in Action program at the Open University of the UK is further evidence of my communication abilities.

Research Activities:

I have taken on the challenge of conducting individual research projects, such as working with minor ethnic groups (Khasia, Tripuri, and Monipuri) in the Sylhet Division of Bangladesh. I carefully planned and organised my research projects, conducting small focus group discussions to obtain a wide range of information. My experience includes conducting interviews, case studies, and using observation techniques and secondary data-gathering methods. My ability to manage codes and utilize large volumes of data has been demonstrated through my post-doctoral research at the Manchester Institute of Innovation and Research and the School of Arts and Digital Industries at the University of East London. In 2024 my Book on the topic of Digital Filmmaking: Preproduction Phase was published by the Bangla Academy, Dhaka. I am currently waiting for another book to be published on Television Studies for the Bengali readers.

(Exploring Georges Polti's Dramatic Conflicts in Modern Screenwriting Insights from Netflix Viewing)

DOI:10.13140/RG.2.2.25482.17601

Since the inception of cinema, recorded versions of stage plays have been presented to audiences. Early film manuscripts naturally followed the dramatic style of these plays. However, as cinema developed, films began to adopt independent writing styles, free from dramatic influences. Consequently, new film genres emerged. Comprehensive information on whether dramatic conflict has changed within these new genres, or its nature if differences exist, is lacking. Additionally, there has been no dedicated research on the use of dramatic conflict in the writing styles of genres other than 'drama' over time. This study investigates the application of dramatic conflicts in the scripts of modern-era films, guided by the thirty-six types of dramatic situations outlined in Georges Polti's book(1895), The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations. Through films viewing in the Netflix platform this research asserts that modern screenwriters incorporate these 36 dramatic situations in their writing. However, it was found that not all 36 situations were employed by Bangladeshi screenwriters. Further investigation is required to explore whether specific cultural phenomena have influenced local screenwriters to avoid certain dramatic situations, and whether the different social norms of Western and Eastern societies result in the acceptance or rejection of different stories or conflicts.

(University-Industry Collaboration in the Media Sector A Bangladeshi Perspective)

DOI:10.13140/RG.2.2.21497.58721

In alignment with the 'Digital Bangladesh Vision,' the television, radio, and film industries in Bangladesh are experiencing significant growth. Concurrently, there has been a surge in the number of students enrolling in media studies at both public and  universities. Despite the increasing number of graduates with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in media, there is a notable lack of research on their current employment status within the industry. While some studies, such as Ahsan& Dudrah (2015), have explored the workforce within the film sector of the media industry, comprehensive research encompassing the entire spectrum of media sectors remains absent. This study addresses several critical questions such as- Are current media students securing employment within their field of study? What percentage of these students are employed in relevant industry positions? Furthermore, it seeks to determine whether media graduates are meeting industry demands and how universities in Bangladesh focus practical knowledge in their media curricula. Additionally, the study investigates whether lesson plans are tailored to industry requirements and explore the nature of the relationship between universities and the media industry. The proposed research highlights the importance of developing a heightened awareness among stakeholders regarding the mutual benefits of university-industry (UI) collaboration. It is crucial for stakeholders to recognise these advantages to foster effective partnerships. Additionally, government policies should be devised to facilitate and strengthen these collaborations, ensuring that they are both efficient and beneficial for all parties involved.

বাংলাদেশে নজরুল সাহিত্যের চলচ্চিত্রায়ণঃ প্রেক্ষিত ও সম্ভবনা

DOI:10.13140/RG.2.2.24866.13763

Since its establishment in 1957, the Bangladeshi film industry has produced over two thousand films. However, only seven commercial films have been based on the literature of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh. This figure represents a mere 0.0035 percent of the total films produced. Despite the existence of research on Nazrul's biography, music, plays, and films he acted in or directed, there is a conspicuous lack of studies on the adaptation of his literature into films (Haq, 1993; Hayat, 1998). Moreover, there is an evident gap in research concerning the potential for future film adaptations of Nazrul's works. This study seeks to uncover the reasons behind this scarcity of film adaptations of Nazrul's literature and aims to formulate sound guidelines, based on scholarly opinions, on how to accelerate the trend of adapting his works for the screen by addressing the underlying constraints—be they political, economic, social, technological, environmental, or legal.

(Gender Disparities in the Workforce of the Bangladeshi Film Industry)

DOI:10.13140/RG.2.2.23188.41603

The current female workforce representation in Bangladesh's film industry (BFI) is alarmingly low. This research focuses on the factors on how to improve the representation of the women workforce in the BFI. To investigate the causes of low representation, a focus group discussion was organised to hear the perspectives of both male and female film workers currently employed in the mainstream and independent filmmaking industries. Female crew members who were not present during the FGD were personally interviewed subsequently to get a full picture. Bangladesh is predominantly a Muslim country. Therefore, this study primarily looked into the topic whether issues such as a hostile socio-cultural milieu is pulling out the womanhood from working for film industry. Moreover issues such as huge income disparity, or the highly technical nature of the job are preventing women from entering the workforce was also explored. In this connection this works examined the relationship between the three basic characteristics and the degree of greatest adversity faced by female workers. This research also looked into whether current policies allow women to enter the sector without facing prejudice. Finally, this research looked into policies to address the gender disparity in the film industry. According to this study, promotional methods could be successful in encouraging female participation in the film industry. Furthermore, cultural consensus, notably the support of Bangladesh's male workforce in the film industry, may appear to be a major challenge. Their negative comments and lack of gratitude have the power to negate all efforts.
